A. Your healthcare provider may ask for blood tests to see if you are anemic. One such test measures hemoglobin levels in your blood. Hemoglobin is found in red blood cells and carries oxygen to all parts of the body. When you are anemic, your body makes a lower than normal number of red blood cells. Less oxygen is able to reach your muscles and organs.
A. Elective surgery is surgery that does not involve a medical emergency and can be scheduled in advance. Examples include hip or knee replacement and bariatric (weight-loss) surgery.
